Natural Treatment for Bell’s Palsy

According to WebMD, Bell’s palsy is a paralysis or weakness of the muscles on one side of your face.  It is not the result of a stroke or a transient ischemic attack but is thought to be caused by the herpes virus that causes cold sores. If you or anyone you know suffers from this Bell’s palsy and would like some natural treatment ideas for it, then read on!

Why use Essential Oils?

Prescription BottlesDoctors often prescribe steroids for Bell’s palsy, but concede that they may merely help speed the reduction of the inflammation that occurs with the condition.  Even after six months, patients are generally in the same state of recovery with or without the drugs.  Numerous studies have shown that steroids have minimal, if any, effect on the course of symptoms of Bell’s palsy.

Why risk taking steroids given that they are powerful drugs with side effects like headaches, dizziness, mood changes, sleep difficulties, fatigue, slow healing of cuts and bruises, increased risk of osteoporosis, etc.?

doTerra essential oils do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities, nor do they have any side effects. Proper extraction and quality control methods also ensure that dōTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are free of any contaminants such as pesticides or other chemical residues.

Which Oils Should I Use?Frankincense

  1. Apply helichrysum, frankincense, and lavender on your face at least twice a day.
  2. Use rosemary and peppermint in front of and behind the left ear.
  3. Apply wild orange on the soles of the feet and put it in your water.

Other Home Treatments

  1. Protect the affected eye.  Frequently moisten and clean the eye with non-medicated eye drops (artificial tears).
  2. Take a painkiller.  Over the counter analgesics can provide pain relief.  Natural analgesics include meadowsweet and white willow bark.
  3. Apply a hot Epsom salt compress to the affected side of the face.  The salts help ease muscle contraction and pain.

These are just a few natural treatments for Bell’s palsy. Using essential oils that have nerve regenerating properties will speed the healing process. To learn more about using essential oils, please visit me at
